Appearance & Personality
Nerite Snails come in an incredible variety of “designer” shells. The Zebra Nerite features bold, black-and-gold stripes, while the Tiger Nerite showcases a deep orange shell with dark, jagged spots. They are active and tireless workers, spending nearly all their time gliding across surfaces to consume various types of algae, including the stubborn green spot algae. Unlike many other snails, Nerites are very respectful of your aquascape—they will clean your plants without eating the leaves.
Why They are a Top Seller
-
Zero Population Growth: Nerite eggs require brackish (salty) water to hatch, meaning they will never overpopulate your home freshwater aquarium.
-
Master Algae Eaters: They are widely considered the most efficient algae-eating snails available, often outperforming much larger species.
-
Safe for All Plants: They are strictly algae and biofilm eaters, making them 100% safe for even the most delicate “high-tech” planted tanks.
-
Striking Patterns: Their shells are thick, durable, and feature high-contrast patterns that look like polished stones in your aquarium.

Pro Tip for Success
Nerite Snails have a very strong “foot” and can occasionally climb above the waterline, so a secure lid is recommended. To keep their shells strong and vibrant, ensure your aquarium water is not too soft; they appreciate a bit of calcium in the water or a high-quality mineral supplement. They are the perfect companions for Bettas, Guppies, and Shrimp, as they are completely harmless to all tank mates!
