Black Crowntail Betta (Betta splendens – Crowntail Variant)
The Black Crowntail Betta is a stunning, exotic variety of Betta splendens, prized for its jet-black coloration and signature spiked, crown-shaped tail. The sharp contrast of its dark body and flaring fins gives it an intense, almost regal appearance—making it one of the most dramatic and desirable bettas for collectors and hobbyists alike.

Its tail and dorsal fins feature elongated, separated rays, creating a spiny, crown-like structure that’s even more striking in a rich black tone. Depending on the lighting, this betta may appear velvety black or slightly iridescent, with subtle hints of metallic blue or green.

Ideal for nano tanks (5 gallons or more), Black Crowntail Bettas prefer still or slow-moving water, kept warm between 24–28°C (75–82°F). They thrive in planted tanks with smooth décor to prevent fin damage and enjoy leaf hammocks or caves to rest near the surface.

Like most bettas, males are territorial and solitary, while females can sometimes be housed in groups (sororities) with care. This variety should not be housed with fin-nipping fish due to its delicate fins.

Feed a diet rich in high-protein pellets, frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms, and occasional live treats. Proper nutrition will help maintain the betta’s deep coloration and overall vitality.

With proper care, the Black Crowntail Betta lives 3–5 years, providing elegance, power, and a mysterious beauty in any aquarium.
