Freshwater Eel (Common Types: Spiny Eel, Tire Track Eel, Zig-Zag Eel)
Normal freshwater eels are elongated, smooth-bodied fish that bring an exotic look and interesting behavior to aquariums. Popular species like Spiny Eels (Macrognathus spp.) and Tire Track Eels (Mastacembelus armatus) are known for their shy, nocturnal habits, gentle temperament, and ability to burrow in the substrate.
They grow anywhere from 6 inches (small varieties) to over 24 inches (larger species), so tank size should be chosen accordingly—a minimum of 30 to 100+ gallons depending on the type. Eels prefer dim lighting, lots of hiding places (like driftwood, caves, or PVC pipes), and fine sand or smooth gravel to burrow safely.
Freshwater eels thrive in water temperatures of 24–28°C (75–82°F) and a pH of 6.5–7.5. They are carnivorous, feeding on live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex, and small fish (so avoid housing them with tiny tankmates).
Although peaceful, they may hide most of the day and become active during feeding or at night. They’re also known escape artists, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.
With proper care and diet, normal freshwater eels can live for 8–15 years, adding both mystery and elegance to the aquarium.
