Mono Angel (Monodactylus sebae)
The Mono Angel, commonly referred to as Mono Sebae, is a unique and elegant brackish-water fish with a distinct diamond-shaped silver body, black-tipped fins, and vertical black bars. Often mistaken for angelfish due to their tall dorsal and anal fins, Mono Angels are actually in a different family and are known for their schooling behavior and active nature.
Growing up to 6–8 inches, these fish require a minimum tank size of 55 gallons, especially when kept in groups (which is recommended, as they are social). Juveniles can tolerate freshwater, but adults thrive best in brackish to lightly marine conditions as they mature.
Mono Angels are fast swimmers and do best in spacious tanks with plenty of open swimming area. They are peaceful to semi-aggressive, and suitable tankmates include other brackish fish like Scats, Archerfish, and certain gobies.
Being omnivores, they will eat high-quality flakes, pellets, algae wafers, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms. Stable water parameters and good filtration are essential for their health.
With proper brackish care, Mono Angels can live for 7–10 years, adding energy, shimmer, and structure to your aquarium.
