Crowntail Betta (Betta splendens – Crowntail Variant)
The Crowntail Betta is one of the most visually striking types of Betta splendens, instantly recognizable by its distinct spiky fin rays that form a crown-like appearance. Developed in Indonesia in the late 1990s, this breed has quickly gained popularity among aquarists worldwide for its unique silhouette and fiery temperament.

The elongated, webbed rays of their tail and fins are dramatically reduced between the tips, creating a spiky, flame-like pattern—especially visible when the betta flares. Crowntails come in a variety of intense colors including red, blue, black, white, marble, and metallic hues.

They grow up to 2.5–3 inches and are best kept in a 5-gallon or larger tank with low flow, warm water (24–28°C / 75–82°F), and gentle lighting. Provide plants, caves, or leaf hammocks for resting, as their fins can be heavy and prone to damage in rough environments.

Like all bettas, Crowntails are highly territorial—especially males—and should be housed alone or only with carefully selected tank mates (no fin-nippers or other bettas).

Feed them high-protein betta pellets, along with occasional treats like frozen brine shrimp or bloodworms to promote growth and coloration. Avoid overfeeding, as they are prone to bloating.

With the right care, a Crowntail Betta can live 3–5 years, making it a bold, beautiful, and conversation-starting centerpiece for any aquarium.
