Otocinclus Catfish (Otocinclus spp.)
Otocinclus Catfish, also known as Otos or Dwarf Suckerfish, are small, gentle algae-eaters highly valued in freshwater aquariums—especially planted tanks. These peaceful bottom dwellers are known for their constant grazing on soft algae on glass, rocks, and plant leaves, helping keep your tank naturally clean.
Reaching just 1.5–2 inches in size, Otos are ideal for nano tanks and community aquariums with other peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, guppies, and shrimp. They prefer to be kept in small groups of 4 or more and thrive in well-oxygenated water with stable parameters.
Otocinclus are very sensitive to water quality, so clean, cycled tanks are a must. While they eat algae, they also need supplementation with algae wafers, blanched spinach, zucchini, or cucumber to stay healthy.
With proper care and a stress-free environment, Otos can live up to 3–5 years and remain active, peaceful, and incredibly helpful tank mates.
