Appearance & Personality
Polar Parrots feature a unique spherical body shape and a small, permanent “smile” that gives them an unmistakable, puppy-like expression. Their base color is a cool metallic blue, decorated with sharp, vertical black bars. These fish are highly interactive and intelligent; they quickly learn who their owner is and will often “dance” at the front of the glass when they see you. While they are spirited and can be territorial (especially when breeding), they are much easier to house than their larger cichlid cousins.
Why It’s a Shop Favorite
-
Incredible “Panda” Aesthetics: Their high-contrast stripes and bright blue shimmer make them stand out in any aquarium setup.
-
Tough & Resilient: They are famously hardy and can adapt to a wide range of water conditions, making them great for hobbyists moving up from basic community fish.
-
Large Personality, Small Size: You get the “intelligence” and behavior of a large Parrot Cichlid without needing a 100-gallon tank.
-
Active Parents: If kept in pairs, they are fascinating to watch as they protect their nesting sites and care for their young with great dedication.

Pro Tip for Success
Polar Parrots love to “redecorate” their environment! Provide them with plenty of caves, terracotta pots, or hollow logs. They are natural diggers, so using a smooth gravel or sand substrate is ideal. Because they have a bold personality, they are best paired with other robust fish like Tiger Barbs, Giant Danios, or larger Rainbowfish. If you want to see their best colors, use a dark background—the blue on their scales will practically glow!
