Appearance & Personality
The Honey Gourami is a masterpiece of subtle color. When comfortable, males develop a deep, burnished orange-gold hue, often accented by a dark blue-black “bib” under their throat during breeding. Females are a softer, pearlescent silver-gold with a horizontal stripe. They are shy but inquisitive swimmers that use their long, thread-like pelvic fins to “feel” plants and decorations. They have a very calm temperament, spending their time gliding through the middle and upper layers of the tank.
Why It’s a Community Favorite
-
Peaceful & Social: One of the few gouramis that can actually be kept in pairs or small groups (in a large enough tank), they are famous for their non-aggressive behavior.
-
Perfect for Nano Tanks: Because they only grow to about 2 inches (5 cm), they are the ultimate centerpiece for smaller 10-to-15 gallon setups where larger gouramis won’t fit.
-
Master of Stability: They are remarkably hardy labyrinth fish, capable of breathing surface air, which makes them very adaptable to different home aquarium environments.
-
Safe for Tank Mates: They are excellent “roommates” for even the most delicate fish, including Neon Tetras, Shrimp, and Rasboras.

Pro Tip for Success
Honey Gouramis feel most secure in heavily planted tanks. They love to navigate through “jungles” of Java Fern, Anubias, and floating plants like Water Lettuce. Providing surface cover is essential, as it mimics their natural habitat and makes their golden colors look much more intense. To keep them healthy, ensure the water flow from your filter is gentle—they prefer calm, still water where they can easily reach the surface for a gulp of air!
